Chapter Seven

“Here, help me move this table.” Courtney and Jessi arranged a small table up near the front doors. “I’ve got a sign-in sheet here, so we can keep track of everyone who comes through. I’ve got a stack of pamphlets about the shelter and another about the hotel and spa, so I’d like to make sure the information gets out there as much possible. There’s no reason not to take advantage of what we have here. I’ve also got a folder of information about Cinder and his care, if anyone is interested in him.”

Jessi and Dora nodded. The day had only just begun, but they were moving quickly to make sure they could cover all the bases. “Maybe we’ll be lucky enough to find someone who already has some knowledge about the critters,” Dora noted.

“I’m personally just excited about seeing all the other animals in Curly Bay that don’t get to come out of their cages and see the world on a regular basis. I love cats and dogs, but I wouldn’t mind assisting Dr. Snyder just to see what everyone’s got.” Jessi beamed. Her earrings that day were long dangles of little autumn leaves, perfect for the season.

Right on time, the door opened and admitted Dr. Snyder. He wore a polo and jeans with a lab coat, and he’d brought two medical bags with him instead of just one. He came through the door to see all three ladies standing there staring at him. “Did I show up on the wrong day?”

“No, not at all.” Courtney rushed forward to take one of his bags for him. “We’re just all very excited about this clinic. We’ve got things set up with a sign-in sheet so you have all the contact information for the patients, and we rearranged some space back here to form an exam room.” She led the way to the office, where they’d pushed the desks aside and set up a grooming table. “I know it’s not anything like what you must have at your place, but if there’s anything you need me to change just let me know.”

The vet shook his head and set his bag down. “This will be just fine. Now, you said you’ve got a new resident that needs a quick onceover?”

“Yes. He’s seems to be pretty shy, since he hasn’t come out from the foliage very much. I know he’s eating, because the mealworms always disappear from his dish, but he’s very careful not to let any of us actually see it.” Courtney brought the doctor across the room to Ink’s tank, which still sat on her desk. She moved the light fixture from the top and unclipped the screen lid.

“Hey, little guy,” Dr. Snyder said gently as he reached into the tank and pushed some of the leaves aside. “Oh, my.”

Courtney’s heart thundered in her chest. That didn’t sound good at all. “What is it? Is he all right?”

“Oh, he’s perfectly healthy,” Dr. Snyder assured her. He pulled his hand back out, admiring the little black creature that now sat on his knuckles.
